Being kind is the new stress ball..

Hey! Mahalo! Conitchi-whaaaat? Did you know that by simply saying a harmonious hello to someone you could not only brighten their day but ALSO make yourself happier? Oh you did. Well, then did you also know that actually doing it on a day-to-day basis could decrease anxiety and help us to be more relaxed? Can I get an “Ommmmmmmmmm?”

By undertaking random acts of kindness from nodding hello on our daily walks to taking in our neighbours bins has been proven to not only put a smile on someone else’s face but also to rid ourselves of self doubt.

Aussies, you may have heard the recent story on Channel 9 News about a young mother in hospital with her sick child who returned to her car to find a parking ticket - then discovered a note inside from a stranger who had already paid it.

“A note left on the mum's car along with the ticket explained a woman known only as Laura had paid the fine for her.

'Hi there, I saw your car had a parking ticket on it,' the note read. 

'I'm sure whatever you are going through at hospital is tough enough, so I have paid for you.'

Laura also wrote the payment receipt and other information on the note, before signing off with: 'I hope things get better!'’

The owner of the car was visiting her sick child and the last thing she expected to see in such unfair conditions was a thoughtful gesture of kindness waiting for her. Just as this short uplifting humane story actually made it to the news, so to it sent shivers down people’s spines all over the country and has seemed to set off a spiral of good deeds.

From shoppers paying for the less fortunate persons food shopping trolley in front of them to neighbours taking the old man next doors dog for a walk, Australia is aspiring to be a kinder place. For some people it may be a one-time ripple effect just from the news story but for others it may become habit, or even an addiction. The feeling of being kind to someone is known to actually make us feel better than the person we did it for.

According to Dr. David R. Hamilton, acts of kindness create an emotional warmth, which releases a hormone known as oxytocin. Oxytocin causes the release of a chemical called nitric oxide, which dilates the blood vessels. This reduces blood pressure and, therefore, oxytocin is known as a "cardioprotective" hormone. It protects the heart by lowering blood pressure.”

So the next time you walk past someone wearing the workout gear of your dreams be sure to substitute the usual envious glare for a compliment because as were all beginning to realise: What you give, you will sometimes receive and there is no better feeling than receiving love and kindness. <3.
